LORD RIPPLETAIL - HUMPBACK WHALE

ABOUT: LORD RIPPLETAIL (Humpback Whale) Lord Rippletail is a very large and stately humpback whale. He is the favorite uncle of the pod and the family historian. He is also the elder chief adviser to Prince Buoyant. As humpback whales are known for their songs and expansive vocalizations, Lord Rippletail is the keeper of all the sonic songs ever recorded. He is often seen wondering about humming tunes. He is a favorite guest conductor at the Royal Whaleharmonic Symphony Hall. Lord Rippletail has a huge heart and can also be playful. One of his greatest pleasures is spouting a magic rainbow water slide to entertain children. Humpback whales are the most acrobatic of whales. They can leap out of the water, belly up arching backwards, and then plunging headfirst into the water. This is called breaching and one of the humpback whale's most distinctive behavioral traits. Humpbacks are also known for their haunting whale cries. They are also easily identified by their markings. They are mostly black or very dark gray in color on their top side and a mottled black and white on their underside. The also have short and very pointed dorsal fins. The dorsal fin is the fin on top of the their body. The humpback whale has distinctive grooves on their throat and underbelly. The grooves serve a major purpose as they expand so they can take in huge amounts of water when they feed. Another distinctive characteristic on their throat and the top part of their mouth are what looks like big bumps. They are called barnacles. Like Lord Rippletail, real humpback whales literally have huge hearts.
