St. Florian (3rd c.) laid his life on the line daily: first as a Roman army officer, and then as a professed Christian. Fire was a constant danger in antiquity. Roman soldiers often manned fire brigades in addition to their other duties. As legend has it, St. Florian once saved an entire village by pouring a single bucket or pitcher of water on it... and by praying, of course.
