St. Joseph COLLECTION (SAU 35)

St. Joseph (c. 1st century) hardly needs an introduction: He was a “just man”, a carpenter (or stone mason), husband of Mary, and foster father of Jesus. + Principal feast day: March 19 + See: catholicsaints.info/saint-joseph/ for his extensive list of patronages. + The Socièté de St. Augustin published several different devotional prints of St. Joseph as an individual. In this version, he is portrayed as an old man. Ordinarily, St. Joseph holds a spray of white lilies in full bloom. The leafless stem of pink flowers here may be intended to represent spikenard, another flower associated with him, especially in Spanish-speaking countries. See: christianity.stackexchange.com/questions/15061/what-does-spikenard-have-to-do-with-st-joseph/ If so, spikenard with its funerary associations may allude to his approaching death.
