Max Beckmann - German Expressionism - The Acrobats (Triptych) The Acrobats by Max Carl Friedrich Beckmann was a German painter, graphic artist, sculptor, author and university teacher. Beckmann took up the painting of the late 19th century as well as the art-historical tradition and formed a style with strong figures, which he opposed to the emerging abstraction from 1911 onwards. When Max Beckmann painted the "Acrobats" between 1937 and 1939, the artists in the circus were no longer balancing on the tightrope.
