Spring 2017: A boy in first grade confides in me that he loves hot pink, but is afraid to tell anyone because he thinks they might make fun of him. Summer 2017: I am looking for an animal print shirt for my daughter (needed for a camp show). Unsuccessful in the girls' section, I decide to check the boys' clothing. Going from one section of the store to the next was like crossing from a lush tropical paradise to a bleak winter landscape. Suddenly everything was brown, navy, or gray. Summer 2017: I discover that my daughter's size 7 bermuda shorts are the same length as my son's 3T shorts. Fed up and inspired, I started to sketch ideas for children's clothing designs. Clothing that would not box them in. Clothing for boys who like pink. Clothing for girls who want to wear clothing that isn't super fitted. Clothing for children who are figuring out where they fit on the gender spectrum. Clothing that lets kids be...just kids.
