Über mich/uns
At the end of the 19th century, the following painters were all in Paris: Édouard Manet, Edgar Degas, Paul Cézanne, Paul Gauguin, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Emile Bernard, Camille Pissarro, George Seurat, Paul Signac, Pierre Bonnard, Vincent Van Gogh, and many, many others. Art discussions, exchanges, and debates were frequent. Art, theater and dance were all popular and are well documented in paintings and in poster art.

When Toulouse-Lautrec made his first poster in 1891, "Moulin Rouge," the status of the poster was elevated from advertising design to collectible advertising artwork.

Jules Cheret and Toulouse Lautrec were at the forefront of poster art, focussing on entertainment, particulaly the Cabaret. ~ Alphonse Mucha followed, advertising everything from entertainment to household products. In 1899 the Italian designer Leonetto Cappiello moved to Paris. Cappiello rejected the detail and "fussiness" of the Art Nouveau style, preferring a simplicity and strength of design, marking the transition into the Art Deco movement and establishing himself as the father of modern advertising.

In other parts of the country, posters were also being revived as a new art form. Belgium artist-designer Privat Livemont designed posters which combined Pre-Raphaelite art with Art Nouveau. Edward Pentfield was in New York City, designing for Harper's Magazine, first experimenting with engraving, and later with ink and watercolor wash illustrations.
